Welcome to Bingham Nerve & Muscle

We would like to welcome Remy A. Valdivia, M.D.

Dr. Valdivia is board certified in Electrodiagnostic Medicine (the specialty of nerve and muscle testing) and Rehabilitation Medicine. Dr. Valdivia has been performing nerve and muscle testing in Jackson since 2003. Read More>>

Bingham Nerve & Muscle (formerly EMG Clinics of Tennessee) specializes in state-of-the-art nerve and muscle testing (Electromyography or EMG).  Bingham Nerve & Muscle has become the industry standard for accurate and comprehensive evaluations of the peripheral nervous system (the “electrical system” of the body). We test the “wires” in the arms and legs. Patients with complaints such as pain, numbness and tingling in the arms and legs often require an evaluation by our clinic. Patients with unexplained weakness of the face, arms and legs often require a visit as well. Physicians at Bingham Nerve & Muscle have devoted our careers exclusively to Electromyography and the evaluation of nerve and muscle disorders. This narrow focus has given our staff unusual depth of experience and we have become leaders in this field of medicine. We are respected and trusted by hundreds of doctors in the region.

EMG Specialty

What is physical medicine and rehabilitation?

Physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R), also called physiatry, is the branch of medicine emphasizing the diagnosis and treatment of nerve and muscle disorders.  Dr. Bingham and Dr. Johnson are both physiatrists.
How do rehabilitation physicians diagnose?
Relief begins with an accurate diagnosis.  This important first step will determine what type of treatment is appropriate.  A physiatrist's tools are the same as those used by other physicians (medical histories, physical examinations, and imaging studies), with the addition of a special technique called electromyography (EMG). Electromyography is the best available technique for evaluating nerves and muscles. With advancements in technology, this procedure has become the gold standard and is universally recognized by the medical profession. Dr. Bingham and Dr. Johnson have devoted their practice exclusively to electromyography for over 20 years.  This narrow focus allows them to stay abreast of the latest techniques and procedures.

How did the specialty develop?

The field of physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) began in the 1930s to address musculoskeletal and neurological problems. After World War II, thousands of veterans came back to the United States with serious disabilities.  The task of diagnosing and rehabilitating people with all types of disabilities became a new direction for the field.  The Advisory Board of Medical Specialties granted PM&R approval as a specialty of medicine in 1947.
What kind of training do rehabilitation physicians have?
To become a rehabilitation physician (physiatrist), an individual must complete a four-year college program followed by four years of medical school (M.D.) and four additional years of specialty training.  Specialty training includes one year of developing fundamental clinical skills and three additional years of training in the full scope of the specialty.
To become board certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation, rehabilitation physicians are required to take both a written and oral examination administered by the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (ABPMR).
Both Dr. Bingham and Dr. Johnson each hold two board certifications.  In addition to their certification in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, they are board certified by the American Board of Electrodiagnostic Medicine.
Dr. Bingham founded Bingham Nerve & Muscle (formerly EMG Clinics of Tennessee) in 1989 and was joined in 1999 by Dr. Johnson.  They see patients in Jackson and hold satellite clinics in several other West Tennessee communities.

Bingham Nerve & Muscle is committed to giving our patients the very best care and diagnosis.  We are proud that our physicians, Dr. Ronald C. Bingham and Dr. Remy A . Valdivia, are both boarded in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and separately in Electrodiagnostic Medicine through the American Board of Electrodiagnostic Medicine (ABEM)

Accreditation

Accredited by AANEM

We are proud that all of our EMG labs are accredited by the American Association of Neuromuscular and Electrodiagnostic Medicine with Exemplary Status, the highest level of accreditation a laboratory can achieve under the AANEM Accreditation Program. The AANEM developed the Electrodiagnostic Laboratory Accreditation Program as a voluntary, peer review process that ...

Technologists

EMG Certified Technologists

Our five technologists are all certified and have the most up-to-date training.  Each is a Certified Nerve Conduction Technologist (CNCT).  To earn the CNCT credential, a technologist has to meet three requirements:  eligibility (through work and education), a rigorous written and practical examination that tests competency in NCSs, and an ongoing commitment to learning.
